I'm so glad I used HYPR Hawaii for surf instructions! The staff was courteous and patient throughout my entire experience! Don't scoff at the time spent at the shop learning the basics, once you get that down in a controlled environment it makes transitioning to the waves so much easier!!
Ian and Lauren are truly passionate about SUP. The fact that they design and manufacture high performance boards means they have a better idea of what to outfit you with. I was smiling ear to ear paddling on the water and seeing how much better I was able to manouevre compared to the folks that were pushing the equivalent of a barge from a rental shack near by.
Ian's work is out of this world. The boards are absolutely stunning in appearance and quality. His carbon work is the best I've ever seen, he is able to blend carbon fiber and wood to create a master piece. I'm rating him at 5 stars for his quality and works man ship. I wish I could give him more than 5 stars for his training and knowledge. Him and his wife were incredible to work with. They taught my fiancé and I more than we could've asked for. Hands down the friendliest place in kona. It is a must do for anyone coming to the big island.
Taking a SUP/surfing lesson with Ian should be on everyone's list as a beach activity. To truly understand how effective his instruction was, he was able to get my mother who is 66 years of age to get up and paddling within an hour on the water. He was firm when he needed to be and did not allow her to make excuses for herself to not stand up. In my mind, he does what every great mentor or coach does. He gives you the tools and confidence to succeed and pushes your limits of what you thought you were capable of.
Like any new experience, keep an open mind, have fun, and don't forget to bend your knees
I'd never surfed prior to their lesson and was able to stand and ride a couple of waves!!
Very rude staff. We had parked in front of their shop unaware that we could not park there. (how would we? We're tourist & we are obviously tourist.) the asian/hawaiian gentleman came up to our car and asked what we were doing. As one of us tried to explain that we were waiting on someone to come out of the shop he cut us off and snapped "you can't park here, get out now" and walked away. After that we saw them get on the phone and they kept coming over and looking at our car even though we were already backing out. I understand that its frustrating when people park there but we were obviously confused. We didn't know and they were so blatantly rude and obnoxious about it. I would never rent/buy from this place based on this experience. You don't treat people that way especially in this area where it is riddled with tourist. Be nice. Have respect. People get confused and if you are in this industry that is something you need to understand. I'm sure when someone is buying or renting from them they are the nicest beings but this just goes to show that if you aren't throwing money their way they will treat you like trash. Completely ridiculous.
