The Keauhou Houla Slide (Ka Houla O Kaneaka, The Stone Slide) is a largely extant land sledding lava stone track used by the ali'i of ancient Hawaii. It is believed built in 1814 by King Kamehameha. The original length was nearly one mile long and terminated at the edge of He'eia Bay. The extant portion of the houla slide east of the Alii Highway is ca. 2800 feet long by 50 feet wide. The NHL form indicates the extant length is 1290 feet but on Google Earth the visible track measures ca. 2800 feet long. The slide had a hard packed lava stone surface which was covered with grass and other debris (dirt, leaves) prior to the sled runs. The drop in elevation from the beginning to the end at the ocean's edge allowed toboggan-like sleds to traverse the lava stone track at dangerous speeds for this Native Hawaiian extreme sport. This site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962.
