Posting 3 stars because I have not had a chance to actually eat there. I really can’t say anything about the food and atmosphere. Hoping to visit soon. However, I did get an “interesting” service over the phone on NY night. We were looking for a place to eat around 10:15pm. It was our first NY night in Kailua Kona and we did not realize many places were closed at 10pm even though their Google and Yelp listings said open. I called Kanaka Kava to find out if they were open. A lady on the phone replied that they were clearly open since I was talking to her on the phone...ok...Then, before I had a chance to ask how late their kitchen was open because many places said they had a bar open but the kitchen was closed, the lady said, “I’m looking for punishment. Come find me.” ...What does that even mean?
Dishes included pulled pork, sweet potato, cream spinach and we had limpets which came in a delicious salty sauce. Of course there was poi. All delicious. Definitely worth a stop to try the local delicacies.
This is not burger and fries. This is traditional Hawaiian. We tried the kava drink which tastes very medicinally. Supposedly good for you and I could feel a slight buzz. Not quite like alcohol but close. Next time may try the 1/2 kava + 1/2 juice option to see if it tastes better.
Pretty good food at this little stand. They have a small patio for outdoor seating with a few pull up chairs at the counter.
We did not go eat there.
Highly recommend the Tofu Plate! Add the house bbq sauce and hot sauce, and you have arguably the best tofu around. Cash only.
Fun atmosphere, friendly people, chill music, and surprisingly good food! This is our favorite place on the Big Island. Bar staff are super friendly and knowledgeable about kava and the island. It’s the place you experience the genuine Aloha spirit.
I freaking love this place! Locally grown and owned. Go here! I will be back
