Moreover, whenever the opportunity presents itself, the doctors at Ali'i Health Center are quick to misdiagnose "CANCER" or to suggest the rush-rush possibility of cancer in order to milk patients and insurance companies for diagnostic procedures and surgeries. The "wait and see" approach, which is often medically viable, is ignored in lieu of patient's emotional upset and operating room involvement.
Ali'i Health Center is "the only place to go in Kona" because, on a remote Pacific island that is 500 doctors in short supply, it literally is THE ONLY PLACE to go; it has no competition. Were there another choice for services in Kona, I would absolutely NEVER STEP FOOT in the waiting room at Ali'i Health Center again. On both sides of the wall (internal medicine/family practice/pediatrics/OBGYN and general surgery/orthopedics), the lack of patient attention is the same. The only thing they seem to care about is your money and/or your insurance co-pay; patient involvement and patient education is ZERO.
This review is based not only on my own personal experience, but also on the experience of two other acquaintances who have suffered through episodes similar to my own at Ali'i Health Center. If yours is not an emergency situation, do yourself a favor, and FIND AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH -- even if it means driving to Hilo or Waimea. Ali'i Health Center is little more than a "meat market" and way more trouble than it is worth.
Inept cannot begin to describe this place. The front office staff cannot do one single thing with any degree of competence. They book appointments, cancel at the last minute, give incorrect patient instructions and the docs can do nothing to get these people to perform in a professional manner. Our experiences with them were so unbelievable that we have obtained docs on the mainland and will travel there for treatment. The docs claim that this facility is "run by the state" and that input and employee discipline by the docs is ignored. Really? What might that say about the docs if this is the place that they choose to practice? This is literally the only option on the Big Island without going to Waimea or Hilo. Or buying a plane ticket and getting competent care on the mainland. Although the docs at this place may well be competent in their field, their support staff negates all of that. Their unprofessional and incompetent behavior has cost us weeks of potential treatment for what could end up being a fatal medical issue.
The call staff were unhelpful and quite rude. It was rather disappointing.
Absolutely awful, I have to wait months and months to get in, on the day of my appointment they call me and say, I'm sorry Dr. such and such as going to be at a conference. We can make you another appointment months from now. Like they didn't know two months ago that doctors going to a conference! They wait the day of my appointment. Absolutely ridiculous and unprofessional, so I make another appointment months later, I get a call also on the day of my appointment I'm sorry such and such doctors unavailable right now let's make you another appointment months from now. Absolutely awful, terrible, unprofessional office I will never go there
Great staff, very professional and personal care .
Do NOT go to Ali'i Health Center unless you care nothing about the level of competence of your treatment, from the first phone call through the last appointment. These docs, if they want to succeed, need to clean house of every single uncaring and unmotivated person at the staff level. The docs are being presumed to be of the same low level of professionalism, a shame if the docs are really any good.
