We originally only booked a fishing charter on the Night Runner with Captain Shawn. Him and first mate Brittany were awesome! It was a windy and rainy day to start, and the dolphins put a damper on our fishing, but they were able to land us a few hard fighting Tuna. Later that day on our way home another company that we had a snorkeling trip booked with called and canceled on us. We called captain Shawn and he was able to take us out on his other boat, the Miss Mojo, to take us on our snorkeling trip the next day. We were happy to be able to fish and snorkel, but we got so much more. Shawn and Brittany gave us history lessons and restaurant recommendations while sailing close to the coast to point out all the sights and identify all the fish we saw. Both boats were beautiful and we had a great time. Thanks to you both!
When I went to ask Shawn why he had done such a thing he told me that his dad had earned a Purple Heart in Korea and he always wanted to thank another veteran in a way that his dad never was.
I left that day as humbled as I was grateful. Shawn isn't just a great fisherman and boat Captain. He is a great man. While I am sure there are other good Captains in Kona, I wouldn't spend a dime on any boat but the Night Runner.
Shawn and Brittany were both professional and a hoot. We did not get a marlin but we tried hard, caught other fish and had fun!
When my friend told me about he had said I assured him that I had not paid Shawn ANY money at all, to which he replied "He meant that you paid for it by getting wounded in Iraq. As in, your blood bought the ticket." I was shocked and nearly humbled to tears.
At the end of our day when my friend who had invited me on this trip tried to pay Shawn for his work, the Captain refused by pointing at me and saying, "I heard that man has already paid for this trip."
Last February I had the opportunity to go fishing with Shawn in Kona. The Captain and crew are polite and professional, and the area is gorgeous. I had an amazing time, but that's not why I am writing this review.
