Beautiful hike in a rainforest in the clouds. Wish the trails were marked or there was some sort of map of the trails to look at.
If you want to see dense cloud-forest and massive tree ferns and get that Jurrasic park feeling, head up mauka to the Makaula Ooma Tract of the Honualoa Forest Reserve. Just 20 minutes away from down-town Kona, this place is amazing with miles of hiking trails at 1000m (3000ft) elevation.
Basic hike in the forest. Some paths can be steep. Take the longer alternate route if you want to avoid that. Overall good hike.
If you are in Kailua-Kona and don't want to drive 2h to Volcanoes National Park to get your rain-forest fix, this is it.
