I try to be ecologically sensitive, but I always feel like I'm getting something less than in the "good old days." Dolphin discoveries was the best of both worlds... sustainable tourism that delivered a once in a lifetime experience. We took the six person boat and swam with a 16 dolphin pod. They even had a baby calf. The directions were clear - look but don't touch. The snorkelling at Honaunau by the coral reef was stunning too. And again, I appreciated the instructions on how to snorkel sustainably and not kill choral, how to protect the Bay, and even directions on avoiding oxybenzone sunscreen.
Our family of 4 (incl 5yr old and 7yr old) recently booked with Dolphin Discoveries on their morning Dolphin Swim tour. It was great! There were 8 of us on the boat (that looked like it could seat 20+) as well as Captain Mike. We shot out of the harbor and headed straight to the dolphins! We had 3 opportunities to swim with the dolphins (at each point the boat moves ahead of the pod to where they might be going and we jump into the water waiting for the dolphins to swim in our direction; it can be hit and miss, but we had 2 out of 3 successful encounters, so pretty good odds for our trip! - remember to look straight DOWN though too...!). After the dolphin encounter, a high speed run out to sea which was cool (i love bouncing on the waves) and then onto the snorkel swim at the JC Memorial. That was pretty good and relaxed and after we were back on board and chowing down on our second set of snacks (which included a fruit platter, veg platter, cheese platter and crackers as well as juices and cans of soda and water) the dolphins came in to play in the reserve (no swimming with them here as the reserve is protected). On the way back we followed the coastline to check out interesting shoreline formations along the way.
This was a really cool day! Swam with dolphins for over 2 hours - only stopped because got cold. Staff for great, everything ran on time, good price. Not touristy - totally cool. Go!
Overall a great experience. Great guides, great boat - excellent value for money.
Great experience with the family. Saw and swam with lots of dolphins. Went to an amazing reef for snorkeling after. Crew were super friendly and fun. Thanks!
Captain Erica and assistant Tiana were terrific. They took us to two spots where dolphins were swimming under and around us. An awesome experience! The snorkeling at the coral reef by the Captain Cook memorial was the best! There were only 8 of us so it was a more personal experience. Highly recommended!
I'd recommend this experience to anyone.
