Payless and Budget share a counter (and queue line) and takes ABSOLUTELY FOREVER to get your car. Waited in line for 75 mins before speaking to an agent. Worth the $ for more vacation time renting from another company.
First, the shuttle was difficult to find at the curb. Payless is actually the exact same building and exact same line as Budget rent-a-car. There's a teeny tiny logo on the shuttle.
To mirror what others have said in similar reviews, the line was ridiculously long and they didn't have enough agents working (there were 4-5 open stations). The ones that were working were gabbing and messing around with each other and other customers, totally unphased by the increasingly long line.
Returning the rental was a smooth experience, very efficient and took no time at all.
Not impressed with there being an "underage fee", might as well charge me for not being white or something else that you can't help.
This was such a horrible experience! Take note that you get what you pay for, and in the end I would have GLADLY paid an additional $200 to use my Hertz Gold membership. I realize after this trip that time+convenience=money.
Seriously, I've probably rented over 1000 cars in my life. This is hands down the worst shop I've ever been too. Ever. Avoid, go with Avis or Hertz and hope they are better. After the hidden fees they Pike on, it's the same cost.
The line for getting your car takes forever, but I assure you it's the same at any of the other rental agencies.
All of the rental companies are in the same area, which is walking distance from the airport. Unless your loaded with luggage, don't wait for a shuttle. ANY SHUTTLE will take you to the rental parking lots.
With Hertz, I would have gotten an additional driver for free, and it's usually my experience to get complimentary upgrades. In addition, with my Gold membership I could have just skipped the line and jumped into the car and driven off. They most certainly wouldn't have charged my for gas. Would have been MUCH more worth it!
The girl at the counter was professional and quick to deal with, unfortunately they didn't have the car I reserved and I had to settle for a different one but that's typical.
Worst lineups ever. Takes over an hour to see an attendant. Then an hour to have the car brought out. I thought it was just a busy time for the small airport but later my in-laws had the same experience. When I dropped off the car, the lineups were even longer. They literally are waiting for people to return the cars, so they can rent them to you. The shop is a budget and Payless outfit. Also, Extra driver is $11 dollars per day, per driver.
After checking in, we had to wait an additional 20 minutes for someone to drive the car to us. I've never rented a car where I couldn't just walk to the parking space myself and drive off. In the end, it took us over an hour to pick up the car...and this was during off season.
We filled the tank up at Waikoloa (which I am pretty sure is the nearest gas station to Kona Airport) and they charged me $8 in fuel (currently under dispute).
Lastly, when refilling to drop off, Costco near the airport has the cheapest gas. Leave extra time because traffic is terrible.
With cheap cars get all the little "gotchas". For example, we had to pay an additional $65 to add a driver. The agent tried to upsell us to a Jeep for $175. I thought about it for a second, then replied "I don't want to spend that much money." He proceeded to get sassy with me, rolled his eyes, and said "that's not a lot of money for a Jeep." It was rude and he completely missed my point.
The car had clearly just gotten out of a car wash, but they didn't bother to clean the interior. It was seriously gross. Other than that, it was a cheap car that worked, so can't complain.
